Losing Weight With Lupus

Maintaining a healthy weight can be difficult for people with lupus, with steroids that cause weight gain and the inactivity that comes with not feeling well. In this video community member Anna Scanlon discusses five tips for losing weight despite lupus.

Monitor Your Food Intake

Start by monitoring everything you're eating — there lots of free apps that you can use on your phone, tablet or computer that will help you do this. This allows you to track your calorie intake, and

Exercise When You Can

When you're in the middle of a flare-up it’s a good idea to rest, especially if you're running a fever. But when you're not in a flare, it's great to get some gentle exercise, as it can help strengthen your joints and cut down on flares later.

Workout DVDs, using an elliptical machine or stationary bike, and swimming are all great high-impact ways to burn calories and keep your body fit without putting too much strain on your joints.

Reduce Your Sugar Intake

Cut out as much refined sugar as possible. The occasional cookie or slice of cake is fine, but do your best to limit your sugar intake.

Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Fresh fruits and veggies make fantastic snacks, and make you feel full without eating a ton of calories.

Avoid Calorie-Dense Foods

A lot of dairy products are packed with calories, while dairy alternatives tend to have a lot fewer calories, so consider these options next time you’re craving something like ice cream. Vegan alternatives to ice cream usually have fewer calories and a lot less sugar.

Likewise, if you're a big soda drinker try switching from regular Coke or Pepsi to diet alternatives — or even better, drinking water instead.
