What were the steps leading up to your diagnosis?

I began getting weaker and weaker, sleeping more than 12 hours a day. My primary doctor could not find a cause or any treatment that worked for almost two years. I got my diagnosis the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and got out of the hospital after my first wedding anniversary, November 30, 2011.

What lifestyle changes have you needed to make?

I have lost a lot of my independence because of my weakness and many extended hospital stays. I have older children, who have taken over most of the things I can’t do.

Who has been there for you? How?

My Story: Meredith Evans WhiteMy husband for most part, because he is in tune with my symptoms and can tell when I’m getting sick – sometimes before I can.

What accomplishment are you proud of?

I am able to still focus on my slow-paced college path, and hopefully I’ll have my degree in history and next my nursing degree. And I also enjoy my children as adults.

Slow down and enjoy life, family and any little thing you love.

What's your advice to someone else living with Lupus?

Slow down and enjoy life, family and any little thing you love. For me, it’s college football.

Is there anything else we should know?

Anyone who has a loved one with lupus, please listen with an open heart and mind; we hate saying we are sick and being sick. Never assume we are using a pity card because lupus affects the entire body, from hair loss to foot numbness.
