Back pain

For the last week I have had severe back pain, from mid back to hips. I can't stand for more than 20 minutes at a time, it's extremely difficult to walk without assistance. Can't lay down, sit up or anything at this point. Is this a normal lupus thing? My doctor tells me back pain is not associated with Lupus. Then what is this?

  • Hi there :)

I feel your pain. Really. My back hurts all the time. For me, it's arthritis and sciatica.

    Hi Marjorie!

A few questions for you... and thoughts about which direction you may want to consider in order to solve your back problem.

-You mention seeing your doctor about the pain... Is this doctor a PCP or a specialist?
-Are you finding you are having any relief at certain times of the day or in certain positions?
-Where in/on your back is the pain?... spine, or a side or both sides?
-What brought the pain on?.. what were you doing when you noticed it?

In my professional opinion (as a Paramedic)..if you are in the amount of pain you say you are in.. I would go to either an urgent care and see if they will run a few tests...or head to the ER and have them run some tests. The reason I am suggesting those two options is solely on the fact that your doctor seems to be disregarding your issue.

Can your back pain that you are having be a result of your Lupus... yes. You actually could have something going on in a different part of your torso and it is causing you to have referred pain. Lupus is known to go after organs, I have had my fair share of dealing with that on a personal level.

Before I had my gallbladder removed, I had "textbook" pain that indicated a heart attack...

My advice would be that you consider the steps I mentioned above, to get yourself checked out. IF you are feeling something isn't right, and your doctor doesn't run some tests to rule things out... I would consider finding a new doctor as well.

I hope that helps some, and I hope you feel better soon!
    Nicole~
