What were the steps leading up to your diagnosis?

When I first found out I suffered from lupus I was 30 years old with a three-year-old son. One morning I woke up stiff and in pain; my arms, back and legs just would not work. It got to the point where I felt as though a 90-year-old was trapped in my body. Every night I slept with tons of pillows, a heating pad and braces on each hand. I literally lost my strength – my son was helping me to maneuver around the house, even use the restroom.

Who has been there for you? How?

My entire family has been supportive every step of the way and I am grateful for each one of them, especially my aunt, Sherrie Cohran, and my uncle, David Rodgers.

What lifestyle changes have you needed to make?

After seeing my primary care physician and the rheumatologist, I started a daily regimen of medications and a new diet. I also had to get lab tests done every three months to make sure my blood iron levels were right and there was no excessive protein in my urine.

What accomplishment are you proud of?

Because of my change in lifestyle I'm proud that I have been able to manage the disease as well as lose weight in the process. When I was first diagnosed I was 200+ pounds (Size 16) and now I'm 165 pounds (Size 10).

What's your advice to someone else living with Lupus?

Listen to your body, rest, take your medications, change your diet, stay hydrated and, if at all possible, exercise.

Is there anything else we should know?

Keep living, keep loving and keep learning. Your battle with this disease is not over until God says so!
