What were the steps leading up to your diagnosis?

It was a really, really long process. There were lots of doctors thinking I was "just depressed."

I was told several times I was healthy, or that I had chronic fatigue syndrome. Blood markers started showing up, though, when doctors actually started taking some of my symptoms more seriously.

At first I was diagnosed with undifferentiated connective tissue disorder, then lupus SLE after a big flare.

What lifestyle changes have you needed to make?

I have had to make a lot of changes, mostly that I need more sleep and that I mostly work from home to support myself.

Who has been there for you? How?

My parents and my boyfriend have been there through it all, though I know it gets very taxing on them as well.

I was told several times I was healthy, or that I had chronic fatigue syndrome.

What accomplishment are you proud of?

Despite all of this, I will be finishing my PhD this fall. I also have two MA degrees, and I am proud to have completed them despite my diagnosis.

Don't compare your journey to someone else's — everyone is different.

Is there anything else we should know?

For the past couple of years, I have also suffered with a debilitating mystery side pain and constant bladder infections. It has affected everything in my life and has been really difficult, if I'm totally honest.
